This is the ultimate book review that I have for you, Ice and Fire: A tale of civil war, loyalty, honor, hate and hope. The first book in this series was A Feast of Crows. After reading the first book, I decided that I would finally lay my eyes on the rest of the series. I have to admit, I was nervous about reading this one, because it was written by a man known as George R.R. Martin, who has managed to create a masterpiece in the fantasy genre.
Now, let me give you a brief synopsis of the story. Prince Aemon, the Prince of Stormlands, is leading an army of his own, when he encounters an ominous and powerful ice witch named Melisandra. He demands proof that she can stop the fire before taking him as her mate. She tells him that she is a sorceress, the daughter of the mountain god of Mount Asmodel, and that he can prove his strength with the help of her abilities. But first, he must defeat the wildling tribes known as the Free Folk, led by his old friend and brother Telramund.
I must say that while I was reading the book, I literally felt as if I was transported into the game. If you have played the Age of Conan or the Warhammer Online, you will feel the same way. The visual and audio immersion were truly impressive and this really enhanced the book’s immersion. From beginning to end, this book kept me hooked and made me realize that Martin has definitely created one of the best fantasy novels ever.
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill fantasy book where you read what happens from one chapter to the next. Martin’s story keeps you hooked from start to finish. I especially loved the part when Melisandra teaches Aemon about how to become a prince and reign over his people. It’s a very interesting scene and one that I wish I had more of in the book. If you haven’t read the books, it’s definitely a good introduction.
If you are familiar with the Age of Conan and the Warhammer Online game, you will definitely understand what I’m talking about. Well, I wouldn’t call the book too advanced for the game, but it does bring a lot of things into play that will help you immerse yourself in the world of Conan and reach out to other races and classes. That being said, it’s still a good read for those who are familiar with the games and who like to see their authors weaving history and characters into the game.
For anyone who is new to these games, I highly recommend that you pick up Ice and Fire: Dragons forge Lore. It will help you dive into the world of Conan and into the game’s world without worrying about going too far and not understanding what’s happening. The book will also give you a very good idea of what is coming in the next patches and expansions for Age of Conan and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. You won’t be disappointed.
